![]() The South Bank Show was given complete access to the Mariinsky Theatre (formerly Kirov) in St. Petersburg to make a film celebrating its 225th anniversary. Throughout 2008, the Mariinsky Theatre paid tribute to the leading figures in Russian music and dance. This film show excerpts from such works as Queen of Spades, Boris Godunov, The Firebird, Scheherazade and Swan Lake featuring conductor Valery Gergiev, tenor Placido Domingo, soprano Anna Netrebko, baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky and prima ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya. The theatre's history has been dazzlingly rich: Tchaikovsky, Pavlova, Borodin, Balanchine, Mussorgski, Rimski-Korsakov, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Nureyev and Baryshnikov are just some of the names linked to the majestic theatre. While looking back at its role in the birth and growth of Russian opera, music and ballet, the film also takes us backstage, to its archives, its labyrinthine underground passageways, its treasure trove of props, scenery and costumes.
